Free St John First Aid course hosted by Target

02 June 2011

More than 300 children are killed as a result of injuries obtained in the home, and a further 60,000 are hospitalised by accidents in Australia each year.

In a bid to counteract this growing problem, St John Ambulance and Target are proud to have formed a partnership and will provide a FREE first aid training course for parents and carers of children under the age of 12 at the St John centre in Mount Gambier, on Thursday 30th June 2011.

CEO of St John Ambulance SA Inc, Sharyn Mitten said that at least one member of every family in Australia should be trained in first aid, as the techniques learnt in these courses will be instrumental in saving a child’s life.

“Providing free first aid training courses in partnership with stores such as Target Mount Gambier is a wonderful opportunity for parents and carers to get a better understanding of how childhood accidents and injuries can be prevented. We’re really proud of the partnership we have with Target enabling us to teach basic first aid to more members of the community,” said Ms Mitten.

The four and a half hour first aid course, designed for parents and carers of children aged 0-12 years, covers first aid techniques dealing with choking, fractures, insect bites, child and infant resuscitation, poisoning, burns and scalds.

Target Mount Gambier Store Manager, Rocco Bueti, said the partnership with St John is one of Target’s many initiatives this year and is a key component of the company’s community relations strategy, which focuses on ‘happy, safe families’.

"St John Ambulance delivers a very important service and we are delighted to be offering this free training course which will provide 20 carers of children in our local community with the opportunity to learn these vital life saving skills. I encourage anyone who cares for a child to take advantage of this free course and register now as the skills you learn could help save a child’s life,” said Mr Bueti.

The free course, which includes a light lunch, will be held from 9.30am until 2pm on Thursday 30th June at St John, 46 Penola Road, Mount Gambier, SA 5290. The course is limited to 20 places and members of the community can register by calling St John on Freecall 1300 106 499.

The Target Mount Gambier course is one of approximately 80 courses that will be held in partnership with Target stores across Australia before 30th June 2011, which will see over 1500 carers of children trained nationally.
