When a school mate fell off his bike during a trip to China, Hrishikesh Rajaram jumped into action.

"My friends and I were in China last year cycling around and one of my friends fell down and almost went unconscious," Hrishikesh, 17, says. "My expertise that I learnt from St John Ambulance allowed me to make sure he was all right and look after him until the ambulance came." Hrishikesh, of Northgate, was named St John SA Cadet of the Year last month after being nominated by his Prospect branch.

He has been involved with St John since 2012 and hopes for a career in medicine.

"Highlights include going to events and helping people at places like the Adelaide Show and the cricket at Adelaide Oval," he says.

"I've gotten to know how to treat people ranging from treating headaches, bandaging wounds and fixing blisters on feet." Hrishikesh, who is a Cadet Corporal, will move into the adult division next March.

St John SA Commissioner Noel Hender says Hrishikesh has a strong passion for helping people.

"After further interview and assessments in first aid and general knowledge, Hrishikesh showed all the values and attributes of being an outstanding citizen through an awareness of current issues and by contributing to his community," he says.
