Safety first at work - always

ST JOHN Ambulance SA’s new advertising campaign is about putting workplace safety at the top of every business’s agenda.

Aimed directly at South Australian employers and employees, the Worst Aid to First Aid campaign takes a lighthearted approach to a serious issue.

Kerry Whitehead, St John SA manager of people and programs, said its own research showed many of the state’s workplaces were not compliant with the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, introduced in 2012.

“Workplace safety starts with being prepared and this often comes down to the basics, such as having the right number of people trained in first aid and (having) fully stocked first aid kits,” said Ms Whitehead.

Adelaide’s Badge Construction undertakes myriad building projects, such as the multimillion Woolworths shopping centre development at Brickworks, in Torrensville.

Badge Construction senior site manager Randall Weeks said working with St John Ambulance SA was a win-win. “We have a designated safety officer (at the Brickworks site) to look after things such as inductions for people who are new to the site,” he said.

“The hazards are different today, and will be next week. To keep up with that, we have a weekly safety committee meeting.” SafeWork SA and Business SA welcomed the St John Ambulance SA campaign.

Since 2012 in SA, more than 30 people have died because of workplace incidents.
