Stay safe this Easter long weekend

Stay safe this Easter long weekend

11 April 2017

As thousands of people gear up to take to the roads for this Easter long weekend, we urge holiday makers to be vigilant and start their trip prepared with a first aid kit in the car. Caravanning, camping and swimming (if the water isn’t too cold!) are all fantastic activities we all love to enjoy but it’s always good to make sure you are prepared should an injury occur.
Getting first aid trained is also one of the best ways to ensure you know how to respond in the event of a medical emergency. Saving a life can be much easier than most people think, it just requires the correct training and the will to act in an emergency. Having a well stocked kit on hand will complement that training and help to avoid unnecessary tragedy. Those heading to rural and remote areas in particular should remember that response times for emergency services can be outside of those critical minutes in which a life can be saved. A first aid kit paired with first aid training when travelling in regional areas could mean the difference between life and death.

When purchasing a first aid kit or restocking a kit to take with you on holidays, remember to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many people is the kit intended to cover?
  • How long will you be away?
  • What kind of activities will you be doing?
  • Does anyone in your family or group have any medical conditions?

It is these kinds of questions that will help you understand what you require from a first aid kit and how you should personalise it to suit the medical needs and kind of activities you will being doing over the holiday break. A preassembled kit is the first step but adding useful items such as medications and removing unnecessary items is the way to create a good first aid kit that can assist you in an emergency.

From all of us at St John SA, we wish you a safe and wonderful Easter break. Though it may be a holiday for most, our volunteers will be keeping you safe providing first aid care at many Easter events throughout the States across the long weekend.
